3D Printing & the AZ Tech Industry

Things We Learned This Week
- 3D Printing tech affects many industries – healthcare, robotics, Aerospace, design
- Aerospace – 3D printing for rockets for moon & mars exploration
- AZ Tech was an Aerospace & Semiconductor hub for years, now growing into to many more tech industries, History dates back to WWII
- Moore’s Law – cost of 3D machines are down, cheaper to use 3D, & growing
- PADT has many Patents, plus also does Angel Investing to grow AZ Tech community
Guest: Eric Miller, Co-Owner & Principal of PADT, Inc.
Eric Miller is the co-founder and Principal for a 3D printing, consulting and design company called PADT (started in 1994). They hold engineering patents for design. Their main location is in AZ, but have offices around the SWest. They have all areas of the industry covered, as well as servicing, and selling the 3D equipment. PADT also does modeling and simulation for clients.
Eric is very involved in the AZ Tech Industry for more than 30 years, as an Executive, Entrepreneur and an Investor. He serves on the AZ Tech Council, and in some prominent Angel Investor funds groups. He has dealt with Startups, and also AZ Commerce Authority in promoting tech in AZ.
The tech sector is covered is covered in a wide range, from investing and seed funding to regulations Government involvement in luring new firms to the valley. The uses of 3D technology affects so many fields from healthcare, to Aerospace, engineering design, building, and even robotics.
Notes:
3D printing – history of factory molding & cutting design manufacturing
3D - slice it up 200x & robot or laser 7 builds material from layer 1 to 200
Intel Pentium computer – currently computing power up faster & complex 100 x à 1000
Modeling & simulation – Bigger part of biz for biz to biz market – make prototypes
Cost of machines down, materials are better, cheaper to make & more robust use.
Construction – build houses
Medical – CT Scan à 3D model to practice surgery on models life saving. Or use it to guide surgery, even cancer treatment – custom parts.
Aerospace – 3D printing for rockets for moon & mars exploration
Robot – hand (end effector) - built by 3D. Get price numbers down and rebuild (reboot) American manufacturing. Automation / robotics / 3D all connected . This is the future.
Not quite AI, but more robotics with AI assistance to monitor. Supply chain is fragile – solution is automation & 3D printing.
AZ Tech – was semiconductor hub, now more tech is coming and more factories being built because of past biz – Aerospace – Raytheon, Motorola, Honeywell
History dates back to WWII – concerns of coastal co’s à move inland to AZ
Radios - Motorola, Honeywell
Missiles & helicopters – Boeing & Raytheon Intel, Samsung, TSM, etc – last 40 yrs
