Education in AZ from STEM to Ideas from the Business Community

- BRT S01 EP34 9-27-2020

Guest: Dr. Jeremy Babendure, Executive Director

SciTech Institute on STEM Education

SciTech Institute is a nonprofit organization that strives to connect the STEM community and inspire individuals to pursue STEM-related career paths and get engaged in STEM events. Imagine building tomorrow’s global leaders by empowering individuals today.

Dr. Jeremy Babendure is the Executive Director of the SciTech Institute, an Associate Research Professor of Molecular Sciences at Arizona State University and a research fellow at the Institute for Learning Innovation.

The annual AZ SciTech festival includes over 900 collaborators, 3000 events and draws over 560,000 participants. In 2015, Jeremy launched the Chief Science Officers (CSO) Initiative.  The CSO program promotes student voice and engagement in STEM and education conversations across 9 states and 4 countries with more regions being engaged every year. In addition, through his work with the national STEM Ecosystems project he helped launch a local Arizona STEM School Community of Practice bringing together 40+ diverse schools teams focused on STEM.

Prior to his work in Arizona, Jeremy received his doctorate in in the lab of the late Nobel Laureate, Dr. Roger Tsien at the University of California, San Diego developing molecular sensors for the detection of RNA. Following this work, he and Roger launched the ScienceBridge program as mechanism to bring current science to the San Diego schools annually impacting ~200 teachers, ~20,000 students, and ~60,000 community members and attaining 12M+ in national grants.

Guest: Emily Anne Gullickson, CEO of A for Arizona

As employers, innovators, and investors in the future, A for Arizona remains committed to ensuring business leaders stay engaged as education champions. They aim to continue to educate and build wider support from the business community on the ambitious, aggressive, and comprehensive education reform possibilities designed from the needs and best practices of Arizona’s exceptional educators.

A for Arizona has a vision to build an education system in Arizona that prepares every student to succeed in the competitive global economy and contribute to their local community.

It all began in Fall 2013, when former AZ Superintendent of Public Instruction, Lisa Graham Keegan decided to flip the traditional approach to education policy upside down and see what might happen if we leveraged best practices from the business community to focus intensely on scaling what works in K-12 schools. In collaboration with now Chief Executive Officer Emily Anne Gullickson, the A for Arizona initiative set out in Spring 2014 to learn from Arizona’s roughly 100 high poverty, high performing schools who were quietly laboring and defying the odds.

Since 2014, A for Arizona got to know agile, passionate principals and system leaders across the state. The growing team watched these schools intentionally help high poverty students catch up academically – giving them access to the life choices that only a great education can provide. Their work was built around elevating these educators’ voices, developing policy ideas and research to support and accelerate their investments in the lives of every student.
